Wednesday Mar 19, 2025
Wednesday Mar 19, 2025
Welcome to The Smiling Homeschooler Podcast! This week we're talking about smiling. Sometimes homeschooling, parenting, and life in general can feel so tough and exhausting that smiling feels nearly impossible. If that's you, you're not alone—it's completely normal and part of life! Our goal today is to encourage you on those hard days and share a few ideas to help you find a reason to smile, even when it doesn’t come easy.
We want to give a big thank you to Teaching Textbooks for supporting The Smiling Homeschooler. They offer one of the best math curriculums around, helping homeschoolers smile more every day. So, be sure to check them out at teachingtextbooks.com for your math needs this school year.
Also, Today’s show is being underwritten by Samaritan Ministries A community of Christians that pay one another’s
medical bills…helping families take a safe step of faith as they feel God’s Leading in career or ministry changes or in bringing mom home. You can learn more at SamaritanMinistries.org/familyman
Have a great week and don't forget to smile!

Last post, and out of order, but whatever. For St Patrick’s Day, we have these little stuffed leprechauns, and my kids use cardboard boxes, strings, etc. to make leprechaun traps. I video them acting out the trapping of the leprechauns and have some great videos from over the years. My 16 year old was more than happy to make one this year when I told him it could take the place of math! We also make something Irish to eat for at least one meal. Little effort, but lots of fun and memories!

For Pi Day on March 14, we eat pies all day! For breakfast we have a bajillion Banquet pot pies, for lunch maybe pizza, and for dinner Shepherd’s pie, and then a couple of Marie Calender’s pies with ice cream. While we eat lunch, we watch funny and clever YouTube videos about Pi Day. This year we were at Nationals during Pi Day, and this concerned my kids, so we had a belated Pi Day celebration when we got home. Again, there’s something about traditions!

Embarrassing, but I have to make multiple posts… Groundhog’s Day for b-fast I make a big pot of oatmeal no-bake cookie mixture, plop in onto my kids plates, and they make little groundhogs out of it, and then eat them while I read aloud “Punxatawny Phyllis” and “Substitute Groundhog.” All my kids love this - my 21 year old does it in her apartment with her college friends! There is just something about tradition.

Hi Todd and Ben! Todd, thanks for the shout out for the high blood pressure game at nationals - we hated losing, but you all have a great team, and I’m glad you all did so well! Ok, I have to address Ben’s statement about the winter doldrums and there being no holidays in the early part of the year. Some of our absolute favorite family/homeschool traditions happen in Feb and March and I want to spread the fun. Feb 2 - Groundhog’s Day, March 14 - Pi Day, and March 17 St Patrick’s Day.
